First Impression: 2013 Aston Martin Vanquish

The original Aston Martin Vanquish was in production from 2001 to 2007, serving as the flagship for Aston Martin. It served as the Bond car in Die Another Day. In 2007, Aston Martin came out with the DBS, a grand tourer that served as the successor to the Vanquish. In 2012, Aston Martin revealed the Project AM310 Concept. The concept car became the new Aston Martin Vanquish. The new Vanquish is the successor to the Aston Martin DBS. The Vanquish is a front-engine, rear-wheel drive, two-door grand tourer.

I saw the new Vanquish at the 2013 Houston Auto Show. This was the main car I wanted to see at the auto show. However, this was not one of the seventy cars I drove during the five day event. The local Aston Martin dealership has a few Aston Martins on display, including an unfinished Vanquish. Aston Martins are known for power, beauty, and soul. The Vanquish is beautiful. It is more refined than the DBS. Compared to the old Vanquish, the new Vanquish has a small grill, sleeker side body lines, and a wider hole on the lower part of the front bumper. While the old Vanquish has beauty, the new Vanquish has both beauty and aggressive styling. The new Vanquish will turn heads when it is on the road.

The Vanquish is powered by a 5.9L V12, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting mode, that produces 565 hp and and 457 lb-ft of toque. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds and reaches a top speed of 183 mph. Prices for the Vanquish start at $282,110. The Vanquish has power, speed, and acceleration, but it comes at a steep price.

Final Thoughts: The Vanquish is another car worthy of the Aston Martin badge. The Vanquish has beauty, power, and soul. This car is beautiful and has an aggressive styling. Plus, it has good acceleration and a supercar speed. This is one amazing car. But it is expensive. Still, if you can afford it, take it out for a drive.

First Impression: 2013 SRT Viper

The original Dodge Viper was revealed as a concept car at the 1989 North American International Auto Show. The concept car received positive reaction to the point that Chrysler decided to turn the Viper concept into a production car. Chrysler's chief engineer selected 85 engineers to be part of Team Viper, which became SRT, or Street and Racing Technology. The first Dodge Viper went into production in 1992, a two-door roadster that contained a 8.0L V10 engine under the hood. Starting in 1996, a second generation Viper started its production run in 1996 and lasted until 2002. The second generation Viper was available as either a two-door roadster or a two-door coupe. The Second generation Viper came with a 8.0L V10 engine under the hood. The third generation Viper was in production from 2002 to 2006. After taking a year of in 2007, the fourth generation Viper was in production from 2008 to 2010. All Dodge Vipers are front-mid engine, rear-wheel drive and came with a six-speed manual transmission. One thing about the Dodge Viper is that it never had any electronic safety equipment like traction control and anti-locking brakes. In 2012, a new Viper started its production run. Unlike previous Vipers, the fifth generation Viper was required to have electronic safety features like electronic stability control, traction control, and an anti-lock braking system. There are controls that allow the driver to turn off most of the electronic safety systems. The new Viper would not be sold under the Dodge brand, but under the SRT brand.

While the new SRT Viper was not on display at the 2013 Houston Auto Show, a local Chrysler dealership brought one to the February 2013 edition of Houston Cars and Coffee. The new Viper attracted the most attention as expected. It shares the same body design as previous Vipers, but more refined. It looks aggressive and sporty. The new Viper continues the Viper tradition of having a long hood, a short rear end and a cabin that is very rearward. This will turn heads on the roads and highways.

The SRT Viper is powered by a 8.4L V10 engine, paired with a six-speed manual transmission. that produces 640 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 206 mph. One area the Viper succeeds is performance and power. The Viper has 2 more hp than the Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 and is faster than the Corvette ZR-1 by 1 mph. The Viper is one fast car. Prices for the SRT Viper start at $97,395 and the Viper GTS starts at $120,395. The Viper also has a $1,995 destination charge and a gas-guzzler tax added to the price. This puts the Viper's starting price of over $100,000. The Viper GTS comes with a high-threshold sports mode and traction-control-free track mode along with two-mode, cockpit adjusted shocks. For the price, you are getting a lot of car.

The SRT Viper has been featured on Motorweek, Nitro Circus: The Movie, and Top Gear. The SRT Viper has made a stop by Jay Leno's Garage. The SRT Viper is playable in Ridge Racer: Unbounded, Car Town, Forza Motorsport 4, Forza Horizon, Need For Speed: Most Wanted, Nitto 1320 Legends, Car Town EX, Street Racer Police Dodge, Real Racing 3, Grid 2, and Fast and Furious 6: The Game.

Final Thoughts: The SRT Viper is an incredible grand tourer. It shares the same body layout as previous Vipers, but with a more refined look. As with all Vipers, the SRT Viper has a long hood and a rearward cabin. Plus it has a V10 engine, keeping up with tradition. What can turn away some Viper diehards is that the SRT Viper has electronic safety systems that were absent in the previous Vipers. For those that want to feel adventurous in the new Viper, you can turn off most of the electronic safety systems. The New Viper is an amazing car. I am just wandering, why is Chrysler taking away models from the Dodge brand since Ram is now its own brand and the Viper is now under the SRT brand? Whatever the reason is, I hope that there are more models planned for the SRT Brand.

First Impression: 2012 Bentley Mulsanne

The original Bentley Mulsanne was produced from 1980 to 1992. The name comes from the Mulsanne Straight, a stretch of the 24 Hours of LeMans course where cars reach their highest speeds. Between 1924 and 1930, Bentley had five victories at the 24 Hours of LeMans. While the Mulsanne was based on the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit/Silver Spur, all Bentley models at that time were based on the Mulsanne until 1998, when the Bentley Arnage was introduced. In 1998, Volkswagen bought Bentely. The new Bentley Continental GT, Continental GTC, and Continental Flying Spur would be built on the same platform as the Volkswagen Phaeton. On August 16, 2009, Bentley unveiled a new four-door luxury sedan at the 2009 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. This new Bentley went for $550,000 at the Pebble Beach car auction. This new car is the Bentley Mulsanne. Production for the Mulsanne commenced in 2010. The new Mulsanne is the first car to be independently designed by Bentley in 80 years since the W.O. Bentley 8 Litre model in 1930. From 1930 until 1998, most Bentleys shared platforms with Rolls-Royce models. The Bentley Mulsanne is a front-engine, rear-wheel drive, four-door sedan that serves as the flagship for Bentley.

I first saw the Mulsanne at the 2012 Houston Auto Show. This was one of three Bentleys on display, the other two being the Bentley Continental GT and the Bentley Continental GTC. I have seen both versions of the Continental around Houston and at various Houston Cars and Coffee events, but never a Mulsanne. The Bentleys were roped off so I could not sit inside the car. This car is beautiful. It attracted more attention then the other two Bentleys. It has a sleek, luxurious side profile. I really like how the front bumper and rear are integrated into the styling. Great job by designer Dirk van Braeckel.

The Bentley Mulsane is powered by a twin-turbocharged 6.75L V8 engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, that produces 505 hp and 752 lb-ft of torque. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 184 mph. The Mulsanne does have some power under the hood, but it also weighs 5,700 pounds. It has good acceleration for a car of that size and weight. Prices for the Mulsanne start at $325,000. This is high, but added options can put the price over $500,000. The Mulsanne is expensive, but that is the price for luxury and performance.

The Bentley Mulsanne has been featured on RTL Autowereld, Auto Esporte, Cars.TV, The Car Show, Ultimate Factories, Mission Impossible-Ghost Protocal, Rubbeldiekatz, Motorweek, and Hotel Desire. The Mulsanne has made a stop by Jay Leno's Garage. The Bentley Mulsanne is playable in Saints Row: The Third and Saints Row IV.

Final Thoughts: The Bentley Mulsanne is a beautiful car. It has power and performance, but it is also expensive. $325,000 is quite a bit of money for a car. While I am not a big fan of the Bentley Continental GT. I see quite a few Continental GTs on Houston roads. I have seen the Mulsanne only once outside of an auto show, and that was recently outside a Houston restaurant. If you go with the Mulsanne, you get exclusivity, something that you would not get with the Continental GT. If you can afford one, go ahead and take it out for a test drive.

First Impression: Chevrolet Corvette C7 Stingray

The Chevrolet Corvette is an American icon. It has been around since 1953. The Corvette is a two door, front engine, rear wheel drive vehicle that came either as a coupe or convertible. The Corvette C6 has been around since 2004. Now, Chevrolet has been planning the next generation in 2007. Chevrolet planned to release the next generation Corvette in 2011, but delayed it. The plan is to bring back the Corvette Stingray. A Corvette Stingray concept was shown in the Transformers live action movies. I even saw the concept car at the 2011 Houston Auto Show. However, the concept car was not the C7 Chevrolet ended up releasing. On January 13, 2013, at approximately 6:00 PM CST in Detroit, General Motors revealed the all new Chevrolet Corvette C7. The C7 is the third Corvette to be called "Stingray." The other Stingrays were the C2 Corvette and the C3 Corvette. The Chevrolet Corvette was available for purchase during the fall of 2013. While the C7 has been released, the C6 will still be made in Grand Sport, Z06, and ZR-1 versions.

Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept at 2011 Houston Auto Show
While the Corvette Stingray Concept was at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, it was absent at the 2013 Houston Auto Show (BOO!). I had to wait until the October 2013 edition of Houston Cars and Coffee to see the C7 Corvette. There were five group together, three coupes and two convertibles. The C7 Corvette looks amazing. I love that Chevrolet pays homage to the original C1 Corvette with the Mako Shark grill that was present on the original C1 Corvette. The C7 has a peak hood, whereas the C4, C5, and C6 Corvettes had flat hoods. I also love how the headlights are designed. The C7 aslo has a nice side profile. I just love the design of the rear end. There are four exhaust tips below the center of the rear bumper. I just love the design of the taillights. This is the best looking vehicle that Chevrolet has ever made, let alone the best looking Corvette.

The Chevrolet Corvette is powered by a 6.2L V8 engine, paired with either a seven-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission, that produces 460 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 195 mph. Prices for the C7 Corvette Coupe start at $51,995, including a $995 destination charge. The MSRP for a Corvette 3LT with Z51 Performance Package starts at $62,995. Prices for a base C7 Corvette Stingray Convertible start at $56,995. The MSRP for a Corvette Stingray Convertible 3LT with the Z51 Performance Package starts at $67,800. Compared to its competion, the C7 Corvette is a bargain. A base Porsche 911 Carrera starts at $84,300.

The C7 Corvette has been featured on Motorweek, Top Gear US, Jay Leno's Garage, Turbo, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. The C7 Corvette is playable in Grand Theft Auto V (Invetero Coquette' C7), GT Racing 2: The Real Car Experience, Gran Turismo 5, Asphalt 8: Airborne, Need For Speed; Rivals, and Gran Turismo 6.

Final Thoughts: While it would have been cool to see the Corvette Stingray Concept as the actual C7 would have been nice, the C7 Corvette we got instead is even better. The C7 Corvette is the best looking vehicle made for the Chevrolet brand. The C7 Corvette is a bargain with a starting price of $51,995. This car has near supercar performance at a fraction of the cost of a Ferrari or Lamborghini. The C7 Corvette has been named Automobile of the Year 2014 by Automobile Magazine and Performance Car of the Year 2013 by Road and Track. It is also a finalist for Motortrend's Car of the Year. Chevrolet has announced a Z06 version of the C7 Corvette starting in 2015. This version will have supercharged 6.2L V8 that produces 625 hp. I am hoping somewhere in the next few years that Chevrolet comes out with a ZR-1 version of the C7 Corvette. So far, I have been impressed by the C7 Corvette.

First Impression: Ferrari F12berlinetta

On February 29, 2012, Ferrari announced that its fastest street car ever. This new Ferrari replaced the outgoing 599 GTB Fiorano. Ferrari was originally going to call this vehicle the 620 GT, but it became the F12berlinetta. The F12 made is first public appearance at the 2012 International Geneva Motor Show, which was held from March 8 to March 18 of 2012. The F12 was named Top Gear's 2012 Supercar of the Year. The F12 is front engine, rear-wheel drive, two door grand tourer.

The F12 is a step up from the 599 in the design category. The F12 has a more aggressive front fascia, side profile, headlights, hood, and rear. It is another work of art done by Ferrari Styling Centre and Pininfarina. The design of the F12 is to generate downforce and have a drag coefficient of under 0.3. At 120 mph, the F12 generates 271 pounds of downforce and has a drag coefficient 0.299. Aerodynamics as a major factor in its design with the aero bridge that runs from the hood, through the flanks, and along the side of the F12, which helps with the downforce creation.

The F12 is powered by a 6.3L V12 engine, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission, that produces 730 hp and 509 lb-ft of torque. That is the most powerful engine ever put in a Ferrari at the time. Since then, the LaFerrari has topped it with 950 hp coming from its hybrid powerplant. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 211 mph. That is quick and fast, but it does not top the Enzo's top speed of 217 mph, which only gets 651 hp from its V12 engine. Prices for the F12 start at $330,000. That is quite a bit of money, but you do get power and performance for your money. The F12 is not the fastest nor the most powerful road vehicle with the prancing horse badge.

The F12 has been featured on Top Gear, Fifth Gear, Top Gear-The Perfect Road Trip, Jay Leno's Garage, and Motorweek. The F12 is playable in Forza Horizon, Car Town, Need For Speed: Rivals, Forza Motorsport 5, Asphalt 8: Airborne, and Real Racing 3.

Final Thoughts: What a beauty. It is definitely a work of art. Still, it is not the fastest as Ferrari advertised. The Enzo, which came out from 2002 to 2004, reached a top speed of 218 mph.  Even the Lamborghini Aventador is faster with a top speed of 217 mph. To be fair, the LaFerrari, which gets 789 hp from its 6.3L V12, was revealed one year after the F12 was revealed. So when Ferrari said that the F12 was the most powerful Ferrari, they were not lying. The F12 gets 730 hp from its V12, which was the most powerful engine at the time of its release. Also, the F12 is a major step up from its predecessor, the 599 GTB. Ferrari has been good about making improvements going from one vehicle to the next. The 458 Italia is a major step up from its predecessor, the F430. The F12 is a good grand tourer and another fine example of Ferrari craftmanship and engineering.

First Impression: McLaren P1

McLaren set the standard for performance vehicles with the McLaren F1 in the 1990s with a top speed of 240 mph. It was the first hypercar. Now, McLaren has produced a plug-in hybrid supercar. At the 2012 Paris Motor Show, McLaren debuted the pre-production concept of the P1. McLaren unveiled the production version of the F1 at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. 375 P1s would be made with production starting in October 2013. The McLaren P1 is a rear-mid engine, rear-wheel drive two-door supercar powered by a hybrid drivetrain.

I have seen the P1 at a few car events in the greater Houston area. The P1 does not look like anything on the road. It has a more aggressive look than the McLaren MP4-12C. Like its predecessors, it does have the scissor doors. It also has retractable rear spoiler. The P1 has a very aggressive exterior and an interior that is a big improvement over the MP4-12C. But the selling point of the P1 is its drivetrain and performance.

The McLaren P1 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.8L V8 that produces 727 hp and 531 lb-ft of torque. The McLaren developed electric motor that produces 176 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque. The total output is 903 hp and 722 lb-ft of torque. The P1 uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds and has a top speed of 217 mph. But it can also go up to an EPA estimated 19 miles in EV mode. Prices for the P1 start at $1.15 million, but all 375 are spoken for. That is supercar performance from a hybrid drivetrain.

The P1 has been featured on Top Gear, where it was compared to the Porsche 918 and the LaFerrari. It has also made a stop at Jay Leno's Garage. It has also been featured in the Need For Speed, Fifth Gear, and Motorweek. The P1 is playable in Need More Speed, Driveclub, Forza Motorsport 5, Project CARS, Forza Horizon 2, Grid: Autosport, Race Team Manager, Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast and Furious, Need For Speed: Rivals, Real Racing 3, Asphalt 8: Airborne, Assetto Corsa, Asphalt Nitro, and CSR Racing.

Final Thoughts; Electric cars have the Tesla Roadster and Tesla Model S to set the standard for what an electric car can do. Hybrids had the Toyota Prius as its standard, which got impressive gas mileage at the cost of excitement. It is great to see McLaren make a hybrid, one that is has styling and performance. McLaren pushed the performance limits with the F1 and now McLaren pushes the limits of what one can do with a hybrid drivetrain.
